Long Lost Friends (The Tower)

12 Feb 1371 (1828 Grimmlands calendar)

Knives and Chronosaj make their way down the darkened path. They are forced several times to duck low hanging branches that seem to reach out to grab at their cloaks or step over vines reaching for their boots. This late at night, everything has a hushed quality, as if the night is holding its breath in anticipation for the arrival of the day. The foliage high above rustles in the light breeze but on the forest floor, nothing stirs. Only the light of the two adventurers glowing weapons provide any illumination in the darkness.

More wolves howl in the distance. A deeper throatier howl echoes off the boughs in response but, as yet, there is no sight of the predators.

Chronosaj’s mind flashes back to the dungeon in King Jack’s castle and the beast that was caged within. While most of the group saw the muzzle and fangs of a large black wolf, Raven and Korbin both saw a matronly grandmother with a shawl draped over her shoulders. He hopes that the creature, whatever it was, is still imprisoned in its cell.

Knives chuckles, “Hey Chronosaj, remember that first inn we stayed at when we came to this world? Maybe we should head straight to Jack’s castle so I don’t have to kill anymore snake monster kids while the innkeepers try to eat us. Awwww…the good times we have.”

Chronosaj hears his companion’s words. The gunslinger shakes his head, “Been one big party after the next out here. That being said, I’m looking forward to seeing the castle soon. Outskirts and forests don’t seem to line up with the chaos in this realm. Quite the contrary to riding ships with hours of dead time. Not that I am complaining by any means…just looking forward to a solid meal and some down time. Maybe the brief time of peace in Hamelin softened me up. Owe that to You, Mr. Mayor.” Chronosaj lets out a laugh and continues to watch the pair’s flanks, a nagging sensation of anxiety regarding the late night travel.

An hour passes. The forest continues to grow darker and thicker with the passage of night. Not even the stars or moon can be seen. Spectral lights float off in the distance, drifting from one shadowy area to the next, beckoning the pair to leave the path to join them.

The duo maintains their course though and after another thirty minutes or so, the trees thin and the silhouette of tower can be seen outlined against the newly revealed moon. A light can be seen in one of the upper windows and the smell of grilled meat is carried to the adventurers, drifting on a fragrant breeze.
