Throwback Thursday (The Adventure Begins pt 1)

The adventure begins in the city of Tsuragol.  The group has made intentionally vague plans to travel east so they can see where the road will take them.  Little did the players know that everything up to this point was little more than a ruse to get them moving toward the adventure that I had spent a year outlining.

Having no idea how this whole play-by-post thing was going to work, I decided that something "light" would be a good way to test the waters so we could start figuring out HOW we were going to put this new format to work so I decided to throw a little mystery at them.  This story is presented (aside from fixed spelling errors) as it was originally posted.

25 Kythorn 1369 DR

The party, now comprised of Raven Straightbow, Alisandra Blueleaf, Legolas Elbereth, Kysek Creepingshadow, Romulus Bramblefoot, James Leatherwood Jr., Morn Silvertongue, Kuna of the Great Rift, Chronosaj of Sambar, Cain Blackstone, Luican Brightmoon, and Thaedous Nightbreeze, departs from the city of Tsurlagol. They travel east along the coast of the Sea of Fallen Stars.

By late afternoon, the sheltering boughs of the Gray Forest come into view. The party sets up camp, establishes a watch, eats dinner and settles in for the night. The forest is a mix a low ferns and shrubs, pine and poplar trees. At irregular intervals, small stands of trees covered with gray bark can be seen through the forest.

The party meanders along the coastline for three days, occasionally passing travelers heading in the opposite direction. Seagulls and hawks wheel overhead and the sound of the surf crashing onto the rocky beach provides an odd counterpoint to the singing of larks and sparrows.

Wildlife is abundant. Not including the ever-present seagulls, there are plenty of fox, raccoon and rabbit sightings. Every so often, the group catches sight of a deer or small forest rothe disappearing into the shelter of the woods. On the second night, James and Raven find bear spoor and recommend that the party hangs any rations they have from the branches above.

28 Kythorn 1369 DR

The animals traveling with the adventurers seem agitated this morning. The horses balk and toss their heads back as the party presses forward along the trail. Both wolves and the dog walk with hackles raised and whine and nearly have to be dragged along. Shadow’s familiar, a lizard named Spewer retreats into the folds of his drow master’s cloak. Romulus’ falcon has long since flown off, clearly disturbed by something ahead.

After nearly 30 minutes of calming the animals enough to get them to proceed, the party stumbles across a grisly sight. A gray wolf lies dead on the side of the road. Its throat has been ripped open and something, or a pack of things, have feasted upon the remains.

Raven crouches beside the body, carefully examining the wounds. After a few moments he turns to the party and says “No blood”…
