Quick Draw McGraw

Image
Quick Draw McGraw is the sheriff of a small frontier town. His seeming fearlessness stems from the fact that he isn't smart enough to realize how dangerous the threats he faces are. He can often be heard saying "Now hold on there!" or "I'll do the thin'in' around here and don't you forget it!" On occasion, he will step outside of the law and act in the guise of El Kabong, a vigilante with a penchant for smashing criminals in the head with a guitar. "Quick Draw" McGraw (a.k.a. Throwback Thursday - The Mines of Titan

Image
Today’s story is about the computerized masterpiece “Mines of Titan”. A friend had this back in high school and I have some very fond memories of the game. It was one of my earliest forays into rpgs. But before I get into that, I should let some of our younger players know that this game came on an actual 5-1/4” floppy disk, and if I remember correctly there were four or five in the box. I don’t remember much of the plot.  The main guy had crashed his ship or something like that and gotten stranded on the Jovian moon, Titan (“Jovian”, like how I slipped an actual astronomical name in there?  I do).  Anyway, the main guy controlled by the player is trying to raise money to get off of Titan.  If I remember correctly, we were supposed to find a missing city and find out what had happened to the settlers living there. My friend who owned the game played the main character.  Another friend played one of the first guys he recruited and I played “the chick”.  I’m pretty sure my ch

Zombie Mosh

Image
Zombie Mosh... a thrift store find that set me back all of $7.99 plus tax. I will admit that I bought it mostly because of the Eddie -esque art featured on the packaging. For those of you who may be interested in the actual game, I am including a video from GamersOnGames for you. I enjoyed it and think they did a great job. Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know that I plan on incorporating ALL of the games from my collection into my current campaign .  I have considered using Zombie Mosh in a few different ways. My first (and so far, favorite) thought was to adapt the Undead Rockers into an "All Flesh Must Be Eaten" format with the characters (Vivian "Rick" Neil, Willie Joe Armwrong, Jenny Killmeister, Maxxx Brakes, Courtney Strangelove, and Stephen Dyler) appearing as NPCs. In this version, the zombies are members of a Heavy Metal band made up a grizzled road-weary veterans who have seen their star fade to the point o

The Dover Demon - A Modern Adventure Seed

Image
It began on April 21st, 1977. Over the course of the next two nights, several teens would report sightings of an unidentified creature which eventually came to be known as the Dover Demon.... For those of you who have been following this blog, you know that I plan on having my campaign cross over with a modern setting . This adventure is set in that world but the scenario involved can be easily adapted to virtually any setting.  • A Fraal ship is damaged in battle with a N'sss vessel and is forced to land. The pilot leaves to draw away any N'sss pursuers while his crew begins to work on repairs. The alien 👽 is seen by William "Bill" Bartlett, John Baxter, and eventually Abby Brabham (NPCs).  Player Characters become involved as either representatives of the local authorities (perhaps from the Men in Black) charged with hunting the extraterrestrials (alternatively, helping the Fraal), amateur UFOlogists, or, for a change of pace play as a membe

It's Got Raisins In It! You Like Raisins.

"Better Off Dead" is one of My All-Time Favorite Movies. Seriously. I have even written about it before . But first, a short clip... You never see that thing again in the movie. Where did it go? What happened to it? No "official" answer has ever been given regarding the fate of Jenny Meyer's Raisin Mold. Given the seeming propensity for strange happenings in Greendale, I propose the following: After slithering off of the table, the Raisin Mold made its way through the dining room and kitchen, then out to the attached garage. Windows broken by the newspaper delivery boy provided a means of egress and then it was loose in the wilds surrounding the bodaciously small town of Greendale. It had only been alive for a few minutes but It Was FREE. It was ready to find out what the world had to offer. It stayed in the shadows not wanting to subject is translucent flesh to the full strength of the Sun. Small insects would fly over to investig

I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!

Image
Implacable…                 Relentless…                                 Unstoppable… He is… Johnny the Paperboy! “Four weeks, twenty papers, that’s two dollars.   Plus tip.” - Johnny Gasparini This morning, while listening to a review of the Archie Comics horror series on YouTube I got to thinking about the movie “ Better Off Dead ”.   More specifically, I got to thinking about one of the secondary antagonists of the movie – no, not the race-car brothers or Ricky .   No, I got to thinking about Johnny the Paperboy.   For a twelve year old kid, Johnny is incredibly tough – he’s like the T-800 series of Paperboys.   He is shown plunging off of a cliff for about 8½ seconds of screen time near the end of the film.   Without taking wind resistance or altitude into account, that puts the height of his fall at about 1,029 feet!   Not only does he survive the fall, he makes one last appearance as the credits begin rolling, riding his bike across the infield at Dodger

Acoustic Kitty

Image
A not-too-long-time-ago, I came across this picture in my Facebook feed and it has haunted me ever since. The Acoustic Kitty was a CIA project that involved surgically implanting a microphone and transmitter into a cat. The cat would have then been used to spy on persons of interest (at the time, the Soviets). The project was (allegedly) shut down after cats were deemed too difficult to train. Like most things, this will most likely make its way into my campaign . In a fantasy setting, the use of magic makes eavesdropping much simpler in general, especially when familiars are involved. In a modern setting, the cat could become a MacGuffin, something lost that must be found, rescued, or eliminated by the player characters. It could also become an animal companion to the party, gathering intelligence on their behalf or slipped into their midst by a rival group who seeks to use it against them.
