Throwback Post - A Confession of Fear

Image
This excerpt is from my Play-by-post campaign May 29, 2014 The party was on the world of Nehwon, preparing to set sail for the Jungles of Klesh to confront a creature known as the Devourer. This creature was essentially a sentient Sphere of Annihilation that had been imprisoned by the gods for trying to destroy the world ages ago. The group had come to believe that the Devourer was slowly consuming the life and magical energy of the world and that, eventually, there would be nothing left but a dead husk of a planet. Raven was worried that the group wouldn't be able to handle a threat of this magnitude. This post is from the night before the group was to set sail. - - - - - Shadow and Sai both take full advantage of the brothel’s services. Cedron arrives a short while later, requesting only a bath which the ladies are quick to provide.  Raven steps into his room and closes the door behind him. He takes a seat on a small bench beside the window and looks outside. Below he sees Maya ...

Cobblestone Courtyard

Image
The seeds that Cedron plants on each world the party travels to quickly grow into full-sized trees native to the region they are passing through.   These trees can be used to open portals that lead to an inter-dimensional nexus between worlds.   This nexus appears to be a courtyard paved with cobblestones surrounded by fog.   Stone archways lead out of this area and into the worlds where the trees have been planted. The nexus is accessed by casting any spell from the Teleportation sub-school on the tree.   This causes a gate to appear that remains open for one round/spell level of the spell that was used.   Any number of people may pass through the portal and into the courtyard, which never seems to fill although, paradoxically, there is no room for any structures to be built within. Once inside the Courtyard, ongoing spell effects are suspended, although their durations continue to expire as normal.   Leaving the nexus allows the spell effects...

Throwback Post (The Death of Romulus)

Image
Where: Mount  Uungau, the Jungle of Klesh, the World of Nehwon When: October 16, 2015 (in real life) What Was Going On: the Party had entered the Volcano's caldera in an effort to prevent an entity known as the Devourer (a divine, sentient Orb of Annihilation) from draining all of the magic from the World of Nehwon. Inside the fiery mountain, the party came face-to-face with a powerful Great Wyrm Red Dragon.  NOTE: Several rounds of the battle have already occurred. The dragon is battling a huge number of adventurers when Romulus blasts it with a cone of cold right after Drax hits with a sneak attack. Post edited to focus on what happened during Romulus' death specifically so other party members' actions are not included.  For reference, Romulus was a Wizard 16/Archmage 5/Druid 2 at this point in his career (he had begun taking levels in Druid after an incident with a magical staff left him stranded in Chauntea's realm minus his right hand but that is a story for ano...

The Penetrating Pony and Fumeridge Enterprises

Image
Monty yells to Borr's men to turn left at the harbor and lead the party down two more blocks, right to where the North and South Docks meet.  The herders do so and within minutes the adventurers find themselves standing outside of a two-story inn.  The sign hanging out front shows two small hoses mid-coitus and the name below reads "The Penetrating Pony". Monty sees the sign and breaks out in a near-crippling guffaw that leaves him red-faced, winded, and gasping.  "I can't believe that my sister let him name the place that!  Bwa ha ha!  Come on in my boys, this is my nephew's place!" "The boy's mother, my dear sister, Elizabeth, wanted him to follow in the family business...breeding horses!  Guess this will teach her!  Bwa ha ha!" - the party's introduction to the tavern and inn they would live in for the next several months while adventuring in and around Lankhmar Arthur joined the party as a replacement character after...

Qi Tam - Disciple of the Whispering Breeze

Image
This short story was intended to serve as an introduction to an NPC my players' party of adventurers were supposed to meet up with while they were adventuring in Nehwon.  A DM's plan being what it is, the group never showed any interest once they met the character and I was obliged to change my plans to avoid railroading them down a path they weren't inclined to follow. - Chapter 1: Qi Tam - The jingle of buckles on a horse’s harness outside drew Qi Tam from his meditation.   As the elder shrine guardian rose from his kneeling position before the altar, he heard the sounds of more men and horses join those of the first rider.   He picked up his cane, a battered wooden stick with the elaborate carving of a hawk’s head, and walked toward the open door of the single-room shrine.   The roadside stop was dedicated to the God of the North Wind, an aloof deity who ruled over the steppes and the people who lived and traveled upon it. He emerged from the minis...
