The Penetrating Pony and Fumeridge Enterprises
Monty yells to Borr's men to turn left at the harbor and lead the party down two more blocks, right to where the North and South Docks meet. The herders do so and within minutes the adventurers find themselves standing outside of a two-story inn. The sign hanging out front shows two small hoses mid-coitus and the name below reads "The Penetrating Pony".
Monty sees the sign and breaks out in a near-crippling guffaw that leaves him red-faced, winded, and gasping. "I can't believe that my sister let him name the place that! Bwa ha ha! Come on in my boys, this is my nephew's place!"
"The boy's mother, my dear sister, Elizabeth, wanted him to follow in the family business...breeding horses! Guess this will teach her! Bwa ha ha!"
- the party's introduction to the tavern and inn they would live in for the next several months while adventuring in and around Lankhmar
Arthur joined the party as a replacement character after one of my player's PC was killed in battle. The Penetrating Pony (the name was created in Mad Libs fashion with one player providing an adjective and the other providing an animal) is a tavern owned by Arthur Fumeridge. Because Nehwon is a low-magic world (with few notable exceptions), Arthur could not start the campaign with much in the way of enchanted items so, when my player and I sat down to make him, the idea of Arthur being a businessman was brought up. Properties (and maps) were generated and numbers were crunched (using business rules from the 3.5e PHBII) to determine monthly income and expenses for each.
War
of the Rats
In the city of Lankhmar, the rats rise up and begin murdering the inhabitants with the intention of taking over the city.
The rats are led by Hisvin, a shapechanging rat wizard and his daughter, Hisvit. Panic sets in and people start to flee in droves.
Arthur, who has risen to the rank of Captain, leads a squad of relatively inexperienced troops into battle against the rats. The rats, meanwhile, are murdering every inhabitant of the city they can lay their claws and teeth on: cats, dogs, Princess Elakeria's marmoset, babies, drunks, and even Elekeria's mother (who is also the Overlord's aunt).
Arthur and his troops are forced to fall back toward the River Hlal and suffer serious losses while trying to protect panicking civilians. During the fighting, Arthur us struck on the side of the head. Once the wound heals, he is left with a scar that runs down the side of his face. Once the soldiers and civilians reach the waterfront, Arthur forms a line for a defiant last stand.
As midnight arrives, the bell atop the Temple of the Gods of Lankhmar begins to toll. The Gods emerge from their temple and begin annihilating the rats. Suddenly, the sound of the largest and angriest cats in the universe all screaming at once pierces the night and the War Cats arrive. The Gods and Cats lay waste to the Rat Army, driving them from the city.
The Penetrating Pony
Arthur completes his term of enlistment and is released from Lankhmar's Army. He uses his separation pay and some money borrowed from his parents to purchase the building where he and his troops made their last stand against the rats. He has the building remodeled and names it the Penetrating Pony, much to the chagrin of his mother.
Fumeridge Enterprises
After a mandatory three-month waiting period, Arthur joins one of the city's larger guilds. As part of the application process, Arthur provides two of his homebrewed specialties (Arthur's Amber Ale and Fumeridge's Dark Delight). Over the course of the next few years, Arthur expands his business to include a restaurant and an apartment building. Eventually, he purchases a warehouse a few blocks from the 'Pony and has it converted into a brewery. He works his way up through the ranks of the guild until achieving the rank of Guildmaster.
