A Midsummer Night's Teddy Bear Picnic Where the Wild Things Are

Image
For your consideration... The Teddy Bear Picnic is the "domesticated" version of the Wild Rumpus. Once a year, on Midsummer's night, teddy bears and other stuffed toys come to life. Fur and claws, stitched smiles and button eyes, all come together in a fireside dance beneath the trees. An enormous moon shines down from above, bathing the world in silvery light. Drums and horns echo through the night - the rhythm becoming more frenzied, more feral with each passing hour. The Teddy Bears become larger and wilder, growing until they tower over their young wards, having become the Wild Things. Children who stumble upon the celebration are rarely harmed but are never the same afterward. They return to their homes, older, wiser, perhaps a bit more wild. They share stories that nobody believes. Those stories have some of the more fantastical elements edited out and are set to music, a nursery rhyme that becomes a song. The child, or children, are drawn into the Feywild. They be...

The Rift that Dreams Back

Image
Raven couldn't remember entering a rift. One moment, he was walking toward Tarithnesti. The next moment, he was here. A long corridor made of polished stone. Faint starlight provided scant illumination. The air smelled of rain that hadn't quite fallen yet. Ahead, a door hung in mid-air with no wall attached. The words, " EXIT (DO NOT USE FOR EXITING)" were carved into it. A voice behind him spoke. "You are not supposed to be conscious in this layer." Raven turned. No one was there. A small bureaucratic stamp appeared in mid-air and pressed against something unseen. The words "TEMPORARY EXISTENCE AUTHORIZED" appeared - floating in the air just like the door. A featureless, gray man-shaped figure dressed in some sort of guard uniform stepped out of the wall. He looked at Raven. Then at a clipboard. He sighed deeply. "Of course... a ranger." He wrote something on the paper being held by the clipboard. "We were hoping for lite...

NPCs of the Crawling Fey

Image
Ellessandra was once a beautiful sidhe woman aligned with the Summer Court. After Raven killed her son, Flax, in battle, she swore revenge. Hatred and bitterness warped her appearance into that of a stooped crone with stringy black hair and deep blue skin. She wore a mithral crown adorned with a spider motif upon her head. She was killed with a Flame Strike summoned by Cedron. Her crown and the title of Lady of the Crawling Fey was passed to Wickerbell, who left the service of the River King to establish her own court. When she fought Cedron and Raven, Ellessandra was accompanied by Wickerbell (who tried to turn her from her path of vengeance), Jenny Greenteeth, 6 Ogres, 3 Trolls, and 3 Fomorian Giants. She also had several Large Monstrous Miilupedes and Large Monstrous Spiders lurking in the ruins of the church she has claimed as her lair. Cedron and Raven - The New Lady of the Crawling Fey

Image
09 Newkolt 349 AC Raven staggers over to where Wickerbell has dragged Cassidy and checks him over quickly. The kender seems fine but in a deep sleep. He looks at the small brownie, towering over her foot-tall frame. "Where are the others?" "Sleeping, in this room behind me. They are unharmed," she moves aside to give Raven room to pass. Cedron investigates the room and looks to see if any other enemies are within view. He finds none but Ornforithalas, Tephysea, and Eilra are all in chamber, deeply sleeping but apparently unharmed. Cedron then turns and lays a hand upon Raven’s shoulder. “I will treat the others, but first Master Sugar Plum, you are of no use in your current state…” The priest then channels his most powerful healing magic, mending the wounds Raven received in the battle. Raven thanks Cedron and then heads inside. He kneels beside Eilra and gently shakes her shoulder. It takes a few tries but, eventually, she stirs. Groggy and confused, she sits u...

Cedron and Raven - In the Lair of the Lady (Part 3)

Image
09 Newkolt 349 AC Beginning of round Wickerbell cries out, "Ellessandra! That's enough! It's folly to persist! You cannot win!" The annis hag snarls, "Begone, fool! My revenge will not be stayed a moment longer! Fight, or count yourself among my enemies!" The small bee-riding fey recoils at the vitriol in her friend's voice. She kicks her heels into the flanks of her bee and it darts forward, slipping between Cedron and Ellessandra to land, straddling Cassidy's limp form. Raven starts to take a step toward the green hag but the arrival of the trolls causes Thorgrim to start throbbing again. The iron blade rattles against the floor. Raven snatches it up once more and mystic fury takes hold again. He bellows a challenge and leaps into the fray, the cursed giant-slayer leading the way.  Awestruck, but focused, Cedron witnesses the Little Black Bird of Death strike again and again against literally giant enemies… Cedron steadies himself from the impact o...
