The Barton Detective Agency

Image
After I finish running my Western campaign, I plan on running a sequel set during Prohibition using a combination of Gangbusters and Cthulhu by Gaslamp to flesh out the world some more before my main campaign crosses over with it.  Bruce is an NPC I have been bouncing around in my head for awhile.  Bruce staggered up the stairs to the office of the Barton Detective Agency and pushed open the door.  Within, he discovered that his assistant, Mabel, the wife of a retired police officer was waiting inside.  Thankfully, she had already brewed a pot of coffee and it was sitting on the hot plate when he walked in.  Mabel looked at Bruce, instantly taking in his disheveled appearance, his stained and rumpled suit, day-and-a-half beard and bleary eyes and shook her head. “Damn, Boss. You look like $#!%.  What the %*#@ happened to you?” Bruce looked at the squat solidly built woman.  She was wearing a dress with a floral pattern and h...

Bloody Mary

Image
Bloody Mary...Bloody Mary...Bloody Mary... We've all heard the urban legend - turn off all of the lights in the house, light a candle, find a mirror, and call Bloody Mary's name three (or thirteen, depending on the version of the myth you are working with) times. If performed correctly, a ghostly apparition will appear to reveal the face of a future husband, curse the summoner, attack, or threaten to steal your baby to replace the child she can never have. Yet somehow, despite millions of attempts, has there ever been a Verifiable Account of this actually working? No. (But if you said yes, then I want you to send me a link in the comments so I can see for myself). Have you ever stopped to wonder why? If, for just a moment, we disregard the probability of the Bloody Mary being entirely fictional or the result of either optical illusions or self-hypnosis, then there is a spirit somewhere Out There who answers to the name. On Earth-218, you can thank (or blame, I...

A Deal with the Devil

“The Devil went down to Georgia (or wherever your player’s adventures have taken them) he was lookin' for a soul to steal he was in a bind 'cause he was way behind and he was willin' to make a deal When he came upon this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot and the devil jumped up on a hickory stump and said boy let me tell you what I guess you didn't know it but I'm a fiddle player too and if you'd care to take a dare I'll make a bet with you Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy but give the devil his due I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul 'cause I think I'm better than you.”                                                             ...

Dr. Bumbershoot

Image
Dr. Bumbershoot was created for use in during the Gangbusters/Cthulhu by Gaslamp sequel to the western I currently have in progress.  Unless something changes, I have him slated to be a private investigator the party will become acquainted with during the course of their adventures.  The character's concept was inspired by and borrows heavily from the Kingsmen movies (I never read the comics so I have no idea how accurately the movies have been adapted).  The sequel will be set in the superhero-based   world that will tie ALL of the other campaigns together . That said, I spent an entire evening scouring the internet for pictures of umbrellas (including diagrams complete with labeled parts), bartitsu , and the Bat-Man villain Penguin for inspiration.  Mix and simmer for a day or two and this is what I came up with... Dr. Bumbershoot (Brody “Brolly” Ryan)               CR6 Male Human Exp...

The Generation Spanning Campaign

Image
(No.  Not that kind) I have been toying with an idea of late.  Last summer, I wrote out a Western campaign (that I am still waiting to run) based on a combination of the old Boot Hill Modules with some Deadlands and Fistful of Zombies thrown in.  I had also planned another set of adventures using the Gangbusters boxed set and modules mixed with Cthulhu by Gaslamp.  And then I said, "what if the characters in the 20's are the grandchildren of the characters from the Western?" How far could I take that idea?  What if the characters from the Western were the great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren of another group from the American Revolution?  And what if the children from the 20's characters were involved in the fighting during World War II?  What if there was an overarching story that combined elements of each of these campaigns? The players begin the campaign during the American Revolution.   Everything seems all f...
