The Ghoul General Meets the Lord of Shadows

Image
With one traitorous lieutenant dead at his feet and the other fleeing into the Underdark , Jamaros ordered his troops to begin marching toward Kilenor, the City of Ghouls. The hike, even in the pitch black darkness beneath the surface of the world, didn't take long and in less than an hour the undead Nordheimer and his company of warriors reached the edge of the settlement. 18th day of the Sunsebb 573 CY calendar Ahead, the passage is barred by a fortress-like construction. Greenish-yellow light shines through arrow slits and the ratcheting "click" of a crossbow echoes off of the stone walls. A dark black gate bars the way and a voice from the other side calls out, "What do you seek in the White Kingdom?" Jamaros pushes his way to the fore, "Conquest!" He shouts, "I come, bid by Doresain the Ghoul King to expand the borders of his earthly kingdom! Open the gates and greet your new general!" Several minut...

Long Lost Friends - Not Rapunzel?

Image
When last we left our heroes, Knives and Cronosaj were "on the run" after Knives had "allegedly" embezzled funds from the City of Hamelin while serving as interim Mayor following the scandal involving the Pied Piper . The two adventurers had managed to evade their pursuers and taken shelter in a seemingly-abandoned tower in the Great and Awful Forest . On the second floor, they discovered a pair of prisoners and were attacked by a decrepit and withered hag.... 12 Feb 1371 (1828 Grimmlands calendar) As the woman staggers forward, Chronosaj pulls both of his scimitars from the two sheathes at his hips.  Fog rolls off of one and settles toward the ground as the icy blade is exposed to the warm nighttime air while the other crackles and sparks with the power of chained electricity.  He raises both, ready to swat away any questing tendrils that reach for him or Knives. Knives turns to face the woman as she staggers into the room, he puffs out his cheeks, seeking t...

And Now Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Program (Day Five of the Odinsleep)

Image
Asgard: A Realm Besieged... While Odin All-Father sleeps, the army of Loki the God of Mischief, Lies, and Deceit attacks the Realm Eternal. When last we left our heroes , they had decided to take the fight to the Trickster himself after spending two days defending the city alongside the Æ sir and legions of Einherjar. The mystic bracer Raven had been given by the wizard Dickory in the Fortress of the Three Pigs had been damaged when the elf used it to reverse time to save his companions from certain death and while Ra'ziir had divined a method for repairing the powerful item , the ritual had not yet been carried out due to the risks involved. Korbin, meanwhile, as the newly risen incarnation of Cunning had gone off on his own in search of magic that would help him survive the deadly rigors of the battlefield. = = = = =  Day Five of the Odinsleep (5 am, 2 hours until sunrise) Grotto spits on the floor, " Pay! How do we sneak up on a god? May as well just walk...

The Mermaid's Tail

Image
I got home from work one day and my wife and her sister were talking about how some girl in one of their online games had spent $2500 on a mermaid's tail.  I was like "?" and they told me that I had heard them correctly.  As first I was thinking "Wow, that could be a really good deal" until they said it was a virtual item. So, for emphasis, a person spent 2500 Real-Life Dollars on a digital collection of pixels. Obviously, this has no effect on my life and it isn't my business to tell anyone how to spend their money but it did get me to thinking that a Mermaid's Tail is something that you could encounter in a superhero-setting and THAT got me to thinking that I could probably give it stats and a cost. But how would it work? I am not an electrical engineer or a certified diver.  I have no practical expertise to bring to the design board but this is what I came up with....

Jack-O-Lanterns for D&D

Image
🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃  🎃 These lanterns, made from hollowed out pumpkins (or turnips or other gourds) have long been associated with warding away evil spirits. When freshly carved (until the next sunrise) and for as long as the candle within burns, a Jack-O-Lantern radiates an effect identical to a Magic Circle Against Evil spell (with the area of effect extending to protect the entire dwelling). Incorporeal undead must make a Will save (DC10 + Wis modifier of the lantern carver) or be shaken if within line of sight.  For AD&D, make these into a Protection from Evil 10' radius , a saving throw vs Spell and Morale checks respectively. Additionally, the color of a Jack-O-Lantern's light changes to blood-red if a vampire comes within 30'*. * I found several mentions of Jack-O-Lantern lights revealing vampires but no method was revealed in any of the articles I read. ...

The War Wheel

Image
The War Wheel was a nigh-unstoppable Nazi weapon in DC comics. Its original incarnation was defeated when it came into contact with high voltage lines, electrocuting the crew. While subsequent versions corrected this fatal flaw, it's great weight made it vulnerable to sinking in quicksand and marshy ground. War Wheels could be transported to and from battlefields by teams of dirigibles. On Earth-218 , the War Wheel would have been created by H.Y.D.R.A. When my players reach the World War II chapter of my campaign , they may find themselves facing off against this monstrous war machine. Guinea Pigs in D&D

Image
Our home has recently become home to a Guinea Pig. He (at least we think it is a "he" - I respect his privacy too much to confirm this) is named Gimli (and Fred before that but my father-in-law and I both refer to it as "the Rat"). I walked past the Rat this morning as it was chewing on some hay and started thinking about ways to include the varmint in a game. This is the result...
