Dramatis Personae


Cedron Maghnus III: Human (Aquilonian) male Bard/Cleric of Malazzarr - Cedron hails from the world of Hyboria.  He joined the party after the wizard Malazzarr re-ascended to godhood.

Chronosaj of Sambar: Human (Lantanese) male Fighter/Rogue - a gunsmith from the Islands of Lantan, Chronosaj wields multiple pistols that he has crafted himself.

Drax Neheli-Arztin: Human (Suloise) male Fighter/Rogue/Eldritch Knight/Assassin/Perfect Wight - an assassin from Oerth who met the party in the city of Lankhmar on the world of Nehwon.  He has been gifted with the Blessing of Lethe, anyone he does not have contact with for 24 hours forgets pretty much all details about him, being left with only a vague and impression of deja vu.

Grotto Grimmbeard: Grimm Dwarf Cleric of Hanseath/Fighter - a dwarf from the Grimmlands.  He was taken prisoner by goblins and tortured for their amusement.  The entire side of his face is scarred and burned. 

Knives: Human (Zamoran) male Thief/Acrobat - a Rogue from the city of Shadizar, Knives briefly served the City of Hamelin as its mayor.

Kysek Creepingshadow*: Sun Elf male Rogue/Wizard - a former "party boy" among the elves of the group, retired to Evereska for some time and blew through all of his treasure.  Rejoined the group looking to fund his lifestyle but somehow gained a sense of responsibility along the way.  He was knighted in Aquilonia and has a wife and son there.

Niklas Splitwood: Human (Grimmlands) male Ranger/Rogue - an archer from the Grimmlands, his uncle was Peter from the Peter and Wolf story.  

Nym “Shadow” Millithor*: Drow Elf male Rogue/Wizard/Duelist - a refugee from the Underdark, made a name for himself up and down Faerun's Sword Coast before settling in Daggerford.  Decided to come out of a self-imposed semi-retirement when Raven invited him on what was supposed to be a trip to the far eastern realms.  Instead, he, Raven, Kysek, and Ra'ziir were caught in an exploding temple of Talos and found themselves stranded in the world of Hyboria.  Was recently elected leader of the party.

Raven Straightbow*: Moon Elf male Fighter/Ranger - A worshipper of Shaundukal, skilled with sword and bow - has a burning hatred for giants. His father was killed during the Elven Retreat from Myth Drannor and he was raised amongst the humans of Mistledale, he never learned how to properly enter the Reverie and suffers from insomnia because of it.

Ra’ziir Azagoth*: Half-Earth Elemental Sun Elf male Fighter/Wizard/Bladesinger/Eldritch Knight - a skilled bladesinger, where Raven is brute force and speed, Ra'ziir is grace and precision with the sword.  Founded a fighting school in Evereska where he instructed other elves in his particular fighting style.  His heart was replaced with a fist-sized gemstone in the Tower of the Elephant, thus beginning his transformation into a half-earth elemental.. 

Romulus Bramblefoot*: Lightfoot Halfling male Wizard/Archmage/Druid - a halfling from Cormyr who has cheated death on three separate occasions,  having survived two retributive strikes (the first sent him to Mechanus and the second to the House of Nature) and returned via a Clone spell after being immersed in lava while battling a red dragon.

* Kysek, Shadow, Raven, Ra'ziir, and Romulus  were all originally AD&D 2nd ed characters who have been converted to 3e and then 3.5e.  I'm not updating them again and will finish out the campaign before switching to another edition.

There are other PCs currently missing in action, separated from the group, or who have settled in towns along the way (i.e., their players have stopped playing).

Osse - The Forgotten Continent of the Forgotten Realms

Osse is one least detailed continents of the Forgotten Realms.   There is almost no canon information regarding it or its inhabitants.   Even the Forgotten Realms wiki has little to say about this Australian-analog. So, of course, my players will be going there eventually .   I sat down with what little information I had and began fleshing out ideas for what I feel should be there.   It isn’t far from Kara-Tur and that got me to thinking about Monster Island from the old Godzilla movies so I decided that Osse must be the spawning ground for Kaiju.   There is also no equivalent (at last not really) for the myths of Atlantis so I made the interior of the continent home to my own version of that as well.   This is what I came up with. Beldam (Other Mother from Coraline)

I watched the movie “ Coraline ” for the first time this weekend.   Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen snippets of the film here and there over the years and I recognized the character when the movie started but I have never sat down and Watched the movie (or read the book).   By the time the show was over, I have to admit that I was fascinated by the entire thing.   The animation and pacing were incredibly well done and the main antagonist was delightfully wicked.   This is who I want to focus on today – Beldam, a.k.a. the Other Mother.   Some viewers may think that she was some sort of demon, offering children their heart’s desire in exchange for their souls, much like a crossroads demon but I feel like she more closely resembles a faerie, a member of the Unseelie Court who is allowed a great deal of independence in her operations.   I also think that since the protagonist, Coraline, was just a child that Beldam wouldn’t necessarily have been overly powerful, holding a relatively low

BeyBlades for D&D

Turns out that my kids are into the whole “ Beyblade ” thing and the only thing the youngest one asked for this year for Christmas was a “Winning Valkyrie” Beyblade.   Aside from knowing that the game is basically a modernized version of battling tops and that there is a cartoon to promote the toy, I knew absolutely nothing about Beyblades up until this weekend. As I watched the boys play with their new “Beys”, I found myself fascinated by their game and the way they talked about different types of strategies and customized builds for their tops.   I gave some thought to a “BeyBlog” that would focus on different combinations of parts, the results of mini-tournaments, product reviews, and maybe a breakdown of individual episodes of the show (although how they managed to wring enough drama out of top-spinning to produce three seasons of the show with over 50 episodes per season confounds me entirely). Accidentally Funny

Humor is not that unusual in gaming sessions.   When it happens on accident however, it can create long-lasting memories. Once upon a time, I ran a solo adventure for a dwarf named Happy Jack.   Happy was a psychic and an inventor of sorts.   From the pressurized wooden keg full of alchemist’s fire worn on his back with the spray nozzle and sparker to his own brand of beer, Happy Jack was an innovator.   His player always made sure to take good notes of his adventures so he could review what had happened and plan Happy’s next move. For the adventure, I adapted the AD&D 2 nd ed module “Wizard’s Challenge”.   I placed my telling of this tale in Eveningstar in northern Cormyr.   The village, a favorite retreat of King Azoun’s was ruled over by Tessaril Winter.   She was known for mentoring mages of all talents and was a magnet for hopeful apprentices.
