USS MORAY (SRN-1)

The MORAY is an atomic-powered research submarine. Built in Mississippi by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Co, the Moray is a small and adaptable vessel.

With construction begun in 1950, the MORAY was designed to be able to perform a variety of missions ranging from underwater research to reconnaissance to shipping interdiction. Unless otherwise noted, all plumbing and wiring run exposed along bulkheads or in cableways above the vessel's passages.

Military Submersible Vehicle
Crew: 26     Passengers: 3     Cargo: 15 tons     Init: -8
Maneuver: -8
Top Speed: 150' (15) surfaced; 255' (25) submerged

Armaments:
  • (6) Mk XIII Torpedo: 12d6 (600 yd range, max 3.5 miles)
  • (2) Mk XI K-type Naval Mine: 10d6

1. Conning Tower: This observation post is where the Conning Officer relays commands to the helm and Engineering. Removable searchlights and navigation equipment are stored inside of the tower when the MORAY is submerged.

Command Deck

1. Torpedo Tubes: These cylinders are used to launch the vessel's MK XIII torpedoes.

2. Torpedo Room: The MORAY six MK XIII torpedoes are stored here. Hoists in the overhead allow the weapons to be moved from their storage rack into the launching tube. The valves that allow the torpedo tubes to be flooded/drained and the muzzle door opened/closed are located here. On command, a water ram pushes the torpedo out of the tube. Once clear, the torpedoes engine activates, driving the weapon toward its target. In an attempt to give each sailor their own space, three bunks fold down from the bulkhead and there are lockers against the aft bulkhead.

3. Control Room: The submarine's helm, throttle, communication station, sonar screen, and other instrumentation are located here.

4. Captain's Cabin: This small compartment is both office and living quarters for the MORAY's commander. As such, it is equipped with a twin size bunk with a built-in storage unit, a writing desk with a chair, and a private head with shower.

5. Laboratory #1: This compartment is 25' long and 7' wide. A work bench with varying electrical outlets, gas connections, and storage bins is attached to the starboard bulkhead. Lab equipment is modular and can easily be installed, removed, or relocated as needed to complete the MORAY's missions.

6. Officers' Stateroom: The heads of the Engineering, Operations, Supply, and Admin Departments share this small room. Each man has a bunk and small locker for personal belongings.

7. Reactor (Upper Level): The main coolant pump for the submarine's reactor is located here. Additionally, the steam generator and turbines have been installed aft of the reactor itself.

8. Catwalk: A raised walkway above the ship's turbines leads from the reactor to the submarine's two mines and steering gear.

9. Mines: The MORAY is equipped with two MKXI K-type Naval Mines. These are launched through separate hatches in the top of the sub. Once deployed, the mines' depth is controlled hydrostatically by a device that measures water pressure.

10. Steering Gear: A pair of hydraulic pistons, controlled by the helm or the back-up helm in the Machinery Room, turns the submarine's rudder. In the event of a mechanical failure or loss of power, the rudder can be turned manually, albeit very slowly, with a long ratchet.

Main Deck

1. Sonar Array: The MORAY has both passive amd active sonar. The passive system can "see" in a 270° arc centered on the submarine's nose and is used most of the time. The active sonar is used only intermittently and as a backup for the passive sonar to minimize detection.

2. Water Closet/Shower: These three rooms,  each about the size of a phone booth. Two are located to either side of the sonar array while the third is in the Midship Crew Berthing. To conserve water, the shower heads do not operate continuously, running only long enough to get wet prior to lathering and again to rinse off.

3. Forward Crew Berthing: Four sets of bunkbeds, each stacked three high, provide sleeping quarters for twelve crewmembers. The lower two bunks open up to reveal a storage area for uniforms and personal belongings. The uppermost bunks have the use of an upright locker next to each stack.

4. Mess Deck: Four tables with attached benches are located here. In addition to being the crew's dining room, this area is also a lounge for off-duty sailors, and, on occasion, a classroom or briefing room. A hatch in the deck leads to observation bubble.

5. Galley: The MORAY's kitchen is equipped with a large flattop griddle, a 20 gallon soup kettle, and two ovens. Food trays and silverware, along with drinking glasses and coffee mugs are stored in cabinets along the bulkhead above the three-compartment sink. A pass thru window above the griddle functions as a serving area to the mess decks.
5a. Dry Good/Refrigerated Storage: Boxes and cans of non-perishable food and frozen items that are thawing are kept here.
5b. Frozen Storage: The MORAY'S freezer can hold enough food to keep its 30 crewmembers fed for up to a month during normal operations. Each meal is planned in advance and packed into storage in the order it will be needed.

6. Midship Crew Berthing: This living space has two sets of bunkbeds, each stacked three high.

7. Laboratory #2: Much like the laboratory on the Control Deck, this space was designed to be modular and adaptable to meet mission needs.

8. Medical Bay: A single examination table, filing cabinet, and equipment needed to treat minor injuries and illnesses are found here. A safe that only the commanding officer and medical staff can open contains painkillers.

9. Divers' Airlock: This small compartment allows divers to exit or reenter the MORAY without the submarine returning to the surface.

10. Reactor Deck (Lower): The S1W* nuclear reactor that provides electrical power to the submarine is located here. Dozens of gauges and dials and levers are set into a cluster of instruments that monitorthe reactor's output. In the event of a catastrophic failure, that entire compartmentcan be flooded with seawater.

* Submarine Reactor, 1st Generation manufactured by Westinghouse

11. Turbine/Machinery Room: Most of the machinery that runs the MORAY'S vital systems can be found here. Everything from electrical generators to the fire pumps to a desalinator to oxygen scrubbers and CHT tanks have been installed in this compartment. The turbine that drives the propeller is capable of generating upward of 13,000 horsepower and a top speed of 23 knots (26 mph).

12. Drive Shaft/Steering Gear: Both the main rudder post and drive shaft pass through to the outside of the submarine's pressure hull in this compartment.

Observation Bubble

1. Observation Bubble: This cramped space houses spotlights and motion picture cameras, allowing the crew to make detailed charts of the seabed.

Using the MORAY in your campaign:

I wrote the MORAY for use in a Cold War/Atomic Horror campaign. It could be part of an adventure with the tried and true storyline of Soviet agents attempting to hijack the ship for their own nefarious purposes. It could be a mobile base of operations for a group that investigates Kaiju attacks in a post-Hiroshima world. The party could be agents working for the Government conducting espionage missions behind the Iron Curtain.
