The duo made their way through the twisting and turning streets, heading toward the forest at the edge of town. They slipped unnoticed through the gate, moving past the guards stationed there like shadows in the night. Once away from the few lights of the city not being carried by an angry citizen, the two moved quickly. After almost an hour, they reached the crest of the hill overlooking the dilapidated bridge where the group has battled the Pied Piper and rescued the children he had kidnapped – a revenge plot against Knives’ predecessor for not paying the Piper’s wage for ridding the city of rats.
Knives - Now ex-Mayor of Hamelin |
While Knives had ensured that the rats would not return to the city, at least not in so great of a number as to cause problems for the citizens, the bridge had not been repaired or reinforced. Holes knocked in the span by children jumping up and down on the rotted wood at the Piper’s command remain unpatched. Even in the dim light cast by a waning moon, the two adventurers can see it swaying softly, rocked by the current of the Rioting River below.
The faint sound of baying hounds carried through the night air, causing the two thieves to glance over their shoulders. Both noted the bobbing lights of fire emerging from the city gate – no doubt torches and lanterns carried by angry citizens turned against them by some political rival, and then back at the bridge.
